V.P.I.
value per pick index

The Value per Pick Index (V.P.I.) was developed in 1998 to measure how efficiently each individual draft pick was used. Each selection is evaluated based on pick number, talent available, positional depth, three year statistical averages, 2001 projections, and the trend analysis of the previous five N.J.R.B.L drafts. The V.P.I. does not factor in the quantity of picks a team has or the team needs. It is assumed that a team would move down in the draft to select appropriate value while meeting team needs. A perfect score on the V.P.I. is 1.0.

First Round Analysis

1. Scrubs
(.95)
Kile (1) was the best player available in the draft.
Wonder if he made the Bean's list?
2. La-z-Boyz
(.80)
Berkman (17) was a steal and will be saved for years. Got max value with closers
Jones (18), Wagner (16), and Percival (33). Two with injury risk is only question.
3. Swillers
(.78)
Bichette (28) has potential for one more big year. Hernandez (30) was top rated closer.
Gordon (29) could actually put up 10 saves before his annual injury.
4. PC 1st Cousins
(.76)
Two first round catchers, Meluskey (7) & Fletcher (31), is unusual. They were best at position.
Anderson (9) provides nice solid, safe value. Urbina (8) was taken early considering the risk.
5. Freaks
(.75)
Lee (19) was right there with Berkman. VPI likes Wickman (21) even
though some experts don't. Hermanson (20) went too early despite scenery change.
6. Monarchs
(.75)
Morris (25) is top 10 pitching talent if he can stay healthy.
Make that a big IF!
7. Beagles
(.73)
Strong start with Reed (4), Vazquez (5), and Rocker (6). Ventura should
be solid. Better available than Molina (27) and D.Lee (32)
8. RH Factor
(.70)
Solid numbers for Anderson (12), but better value was available.
Lieber seemed like a forced pick because other targeted arms were taken.
9. Black Knights
(.67)
Fullmer (2) was the top rated stick in the draft.
Hampton (3) figured to go in the third round at the earliest.
10. Notorious CUZ
(.64)
Caminiti (13) and Olerud (15) expected to go in round two. Finley (26) provides
good value. Better value than Deshields (14) was available this early.
11. Humpbacks
(.59)
Helling (22) is an inning eater that was taken too early. Long (23) must have been
the obligatory round one A's player. Branyan (24)?? Must not have been totally awake.

Daryl Kile
Rick Reed
Lance Berkman
Carlos Lee
Roberto Hernandez
Benji Molina
John Olerud
Russell Branyan
Mike Hampton
Beano's List

Second Round Analysis

1. La-z-Boyz
(.87)
Beltre (50) provides great value despite injury. Floyd (51) was a projected
first rounder. Bell (49) has risk, but is not far removed from big year.
2. Swillers
(.85)
Appier (40) changing leagues could be interesting. Young (61) and Surhoff (62)
provide steady, reliable production in the outfield
3. Freaks
(.82)
Lowell (53) was top rated third baseman available. Perez (54) was taken right before
the drop is shortstop talent. Ortiz (43) was taken early, but may be used in 2001.
4. Beagles
(.80)
Vizquel (37) and Velarde (45) both provide stable veteran value in the middle.
Cruz (48) showed signs that he could be on his way to much bigger things.
5. Humpbacks
(.79)
Woody Williams (44) is capable of putting up near saver quality numbers. M.Williams (55) and
Jiminez (56) were best available of the closers left. Ausmus (57) is a catcher that helps.
6. Monarchs
(.77)
Segui (36) was top rated corner in draft. Randa (58) is always quietly productive.
Better than Stairs (59) was there, needs breaks to warrant this spot.
7. Notorious Cuz
(.75)
Leskanic (38) is the equal of many first round closers. Harnisch (46) and Lankford (47) are
excellent gambles in this position. Crabtree (63) ws scraping bottom of the barrell.
8. PC 1st Cousins
(.70)
Furcal (44) went too early for NJRBL categories.
Eaton (42) is a decent pick if his results come close to matching his hype.
9. Black Knights
(.69)
Knoblauch (34) is a nice, safe one year middle. Aurilia (35) was top pop shortstop available.
The Parque (36) pick? List must have stipulated first available arm starting with P.
10. RH Factor
(.66)
Clark (52) has upside, but injuries and ballpark indicate best years are over.
O.Fernandez (60) must have been mentioned positively in some magazine.
11. Scrubs
(.65)
Hawkins (64) and Kohlmeier (66) will provide company for Nen.
R.Hernandez (65) went a round earlier than expected.
